All the artworks in this exhibition were originally created for the outside landscape, as part of the 2024 Sculpture Trail ‘The Sky is Moving Sideways’, funded by The Arts Council England.
As the Trail was coming to a close, and the ephemeral artworks were being returned to the artist’s studios, I found myself asking the question, what would an inside exhibition of these ephemeral objects look like? The more I considered this question, the more I realised that what I was really thinking about was the notion of landscape, and the sacredness of landscape. Something that’s boundless and immense, bigger than us, yet also something that we carry within us. What is landscape? In the essay ‘Is Landscape Queer?’writer Kate Thomas draws our attention to the “all-togetherness” of landscape, and its capacity to “unmake…difference”.
The artists in the exhibition OUTLANDISH have been invited to deconstruct their site specific trail artworks, for the grade 2 listed building The Asylum Chapel, as a method for thinking and discussing notions on landscape.
